Beginning this week, we're excited to offer streamlined online ordering and payment, thanks to 1000ecofarms! This company is the brain child of Mark Meytin and Gregory Arzumanian. Mark's food journey began when his son developed food allergies. Once he began reading food labels more closely in the grocery stores, he was astounded by the number of unrecognizable ingredients involved in each item, and the amount which involved corn or corn byproducts. While no one could pinpoint the exact cause of his son's allergies, Mark believes it has a lot to do with a corn and sugar laden, unbalanced typical American diet. He looked to farms for answers. He was frustrated at how hard it was to find places to buy farm fresh products. He lacked the information to buy from farms directly, and found farmers' markets to be at inconvenient times and to lack the transparency he felt was necessary for his family's health. Upon deeper online searches, he was surprised just how many farms were near him, some even on his daily commute. Mark was then inspired to create a streamlined platform with diverse payment methods that would be convenient for farmers, consumers, and buying clubs. With his background in tech (he is a technical software architect) he decided to make a much needed tool. "I like to think I'm part of a solution...the more information the better." 1000ecofarms offers free listing services for farmers, e-commerce sites (like our new Black Bottom Farm Collective site), and a community for farmers and consumers alike, where they can share stories, feedback, and reviews. The site is based on Mark's idea that anyone, anywhere is close to 1000 farms that are good for the local economy and ecology, and it should be easy to find them.
